Green City Blue Lake
 

Over the past few months Going Green, has traveled the state to look at people and businesses who are working on ‘greening’ Ohio’s environment.  So far, 17 of Ohio’s cities and towns have signed on to the Cool Cities Program and  joined the almost 800 mayors around the country who have signed the US Mayor’s Climate Protection Agreement to put cut greenhouse gas emissions in their own communities.

 

 The City of Cleveland is one of them.



 

      Starting a Hydrogen Economy
In southeast Ohio a new energy technology is being developed. One that may solve both fuel and pollution problems. Listen to the MP3

 

Manure For Fuel

American Electric Power is purchasing 4.6 million carbon credits between 2010 and 2017 that will be generated from capturing methane on livestock farms. Farmers are beginning to find a use for one substance they never considered marketable. Listen to the MP3

Green Sanctuaries

Growing numbers of churches are endorsing more stewardship of the earth. One denomination - the Unitarian Universalists,
have a process where churches can become accredited Green Sanctuaries. The first in Ohio is in Oxford. Listen to the MP3

Who knew that there were ‘shades’ of greenness? Some Ohio businesses are going all out to build the greenest buildings they can.

  Waste Not !
At SWACO (the Solid Waste Authority for Central Ohio) they have managed to almost double the life of their landfill by keeping materials out of it. In the process they have helped to start some interesting recycling businesses. Listen to an MP3

  Toledo’s Big Green Machines
Mass transit – busses and trains are the way that many people get to work. – and that number is expected to grow over 40% in the next 10 years. But, as fuel prices rise, the cost of running mass transit grows too. In Toledo the city bus system TARTA is partnering with the University of Toledo to study the problem. Listen to an MP3
